Alan J. Butler

Vice President — Security, Central Region, HSS


Alan Butler is Vice President — Security for HSS, Denver, one of the nation’s leading specialized services outsourcing firms. Working from the Denver headquarters office of HSS, he directs Healthcare Security operations in the company’s Central Region, which includes more than 50 healthcare facility customers in Colorado, Mississippi, Missouri, Texas, and Wisconsin. HSS Healthcare Security develops programs that help hospitals and healthcare providers prevent and mitigate aggression and violence in their facilities and ensure the security and safety of their staff, patients, and visitors.

Butler mentors senior level HSS directors and managers in this region on personnel matters, program design, budgeting, leadership skills, and team building. He is a recognized expert on the prevention and mitigation of violence in healthcare and has consulted with organizations nationwide on the design and implementation of programs to proactively protect staff while maintaining a safe, healing environment.

Butler joined HSS in 2008 as Director of Operations and Consulting, providing operational oversight to several large hospital security programs at facilities throughout the U.S. Midwest. Immediately prior to HSS, Butler was Security Director for the University of Wisconsin Hospital & Clinics in Madison. He has been in healthcare security for over 23 years.

Butler is board certified in security management, holding the Certified Healthcare Protection Administrator (CHPA) designation. He is a frequent speaker and presenter on healthcare security issues. He has addressed, among others, the International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety, the Emergency Nurses’ Association, and the American College of Emergency Physicians.

A native of upstate New York, Butler holds an Associate of Applied Science in Criminal Justice from Hudson Valley Community College, Troy, NY; Bachelor of Professional Studies in Criminal Justice from the State University
of New York, Utica/Rome, NY; and M.S. in Criminal Justice Management from Sam Houston State University, Huntsville, Texas. He also attended the Dallas Police Academy.

Butler has participated in the U.S. Secret Service Dignitary Protection training and FEMA World Cup Preparation training. He has completed coursework in total quality management, risk management, police ethics, and other security topics at the Southwestern Law Enforcement Institute and the Gallup Leadership Institute.

Butler and wife, Lisa, have two children, James and Kaitlynn. Butler enjoys home renovation projects, golf, and hiking and biking with his family.
