HSS would like to share some very sad news. It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of a very important member of our family. George R. Schiel, retired CEO, passed away late Wednesday, August 19th.

George SchielHSS has lost a legacy in our history – a man that dedicated 38 years of service to HSS and had been part of our history almost since inception. George served as our visionary leader and CEO for 35 of those years and was instrumental in shaping the company into what it is today. The world has truly lost an incredible human being. Those of us who have been fortunate enough to know and work with George understand the loss of a dear friend and an inspiring mentor who dedicated decades of his life to building HSS to the incredible organization it is today.

George will forever leave an impression in our hearts and in the footprints of our foundation. HSS would not be what it is without his efforts and caring spirit. He will be missed, but we have many wonderful memories that will never be forgotten.

No words can adequately express our loss at George’s death or our gratitude for the opportunity to work with him over the many years of his leadership. He was a consummate entrepreneur, always finding new ways to provide value to our customers and to our employees. We will honor his memory by dedicating ourselves to continuing the work he loved so much and the core values he instilled in our organization. George would be proud of his continuing legacy.

Under George’s previous leadership, HSS evolved from a small, modest, seven hospital-cooperative to a nationally recognized service corporation. George continually imbedded in the organization the core values and culture that drives HSS to provide world class customer experiences – values that remain in place today. We can all be extremely proud to be associated with such a successful and respected company and to continue his legacy. He considered HSS to be his family and embedded family values throughout HSS. And he always found time to devote to his own family, his wife Ginny and his daughter Gina and son Joe.

It is extraordinary for an individual to devote so many years to one organization and we are thankful for the high standards, innovation and balance that his guidance always provided. It is an honor to pay tribute to such a wonderful and exceptional leader. May we learn from the foundation and culture that George built and continue to expand upon those footprints as we reach new heights.
