Aloha, Kona Community Hospital
In 2012, three hospitals in the East Region of Hawaii Health Systems, including Hilo Medical Center, selected HSS as their security services provider, replacing another company. In October 2013, Kona Community Hospital in the West Region of the island’s major health system switched to HSS from another security provider. “HSS’s performance at Hilo Medical Center, was definitely a key factor in our decision to bring HSS here,” says Eric Willis, Regional Facilities Director, Hawaii Health System West, Kona Community Hospital. Other factors included:
HSS’s hospital-specific security experience. “They have more experience than generic security companies,” states Willis.
The involvement of HSS senior leadership. “I could not get a dialogue with the leadership of our former company or they didn’t have healthcare experience,” notes Willis. “I know I can go to HSS leaders such as Dean Sobcoviak and Allen Holm and get help if there’s a situation.
The option to use EM Solutions to ensure compliance with all Emergency Management requirements. “Dr. Tracy Buchman did an assessment of our EM plan. I thought it was a solid plan, but never had anything to compare it with. Given Tracy’s expertise, I was happy to hear that she found our plan to be in good shape.”
Willis says the transition to HSS was seamless and that HSS handled most of the work leading up to the switch date. HSS provides a full-service security program, including a Facility Site Supervisor and security officers. Two officers who worked for the previous company met HSS’s hiring standards and were retained. Rich Haislip, HSS Program Manager with responsibility for all four Hawaii Health System hospitals, provided training to HSS officers at Kona Community. “We are grateful for his help in ensuring that our officers are well trained and have a professional presence,” says Willis. “I find that HSS security officers are higher quality and are held to higher standards than those of our previous company.”
Kona Community is a 94-bed, full-service acute care hospital with 24-hour emergency services. The hospital has been caring for the people of West Hawaii for nearly 100 years. One of West Hawaii’s largest employers, Kona Community has 497 employees and 100 medical staff practitioners.
